Welcome to Oxmantown National School, Birr!
Located beside the magnificent Birr Castle Demense in the heart of Georgian Birr, Oxmantown School has been welcoming eager little learners through it's red doors since 1860.
We pride ourselves on being an inclusive, happy, child-centred school. Our approach to teaching and education allows and encourages each of our pupils to learn at their own pace and to develop to their full potential. Just as the Primary School Curriculm celebrates the uniqueness of the child, so too does Oxmantown National School. Our school motto "I am enough" is very special to us.
Oxmantown is a co-educational, Church of Ireland National School. As such, the school values and respects all children, regardless of social background, religious denomination, gender, educational achievement or physical characteristics. Our school ethos and mission statement forms the back bone of any decision made in the school and directs us in our planning and in the day-to-day running of the school.
Our school community is close knit. Parents and teachers are valued as equal partners in a child's education. The teachers at our school are experienced, caring and approachable and have an excellent working relationship with parents.
The Primary School Curriculum is delivered in a creative and varied way. Hands on activities and outdoor educational experiences are encouraged where possible. We regularly invite professional workshops to the school which make for very memorable learning experiences for the children. The STEAM subjects (Science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) are important areas of exploration at our school. Drama is seen as a valuable learning tool as it encourages children to explore their imagination and express emotions. The wonderful venue of Birr Theatre is located just around the corner.
The school itself is a beautiful and unique building. The limestone walls and distinct carved window and door surrounds make it a well known architectural landmark in the heritage town of Birr. The school has a wonderful new library and digital learning space. We have created a beautiful school garden with it's own outdoor classroom and polytunnel. The large playgrounds, grass pitch and Winter playsheds are great assets to the school. We also have our own school kitchen where a warm and nutritious meal is prepared for the children daily.
